Hotel Reservations
Although I am not attending the conference in DC, I do tend to take issue
with additional fees such as the one being discussed. For me, I view the
reasons as not so much environmental as economical.
The rates charged by hotels are fluid based on demand, and include a
healthy profit margin, especially group bookings where the property knows
in advance the number of rooms they will sell (and has profit-calculating
formulas for related fees from meals, conference room rentals, etc.). If
energy costs have genuinely increased by $3.00 per person per day, the
hotel could still probably absorb the expense and still make a healthy
profit from the conference and its attendees. Adjust the rates for future
visitors, not those who had the forsight (or obligation) to prebook.
Perish the thought there's a worldwide cocoa powder shortage and they start
charging a "chocolate on the pillow" fee, then I'd be really put out.
