The General Library System, University of
Wisconsin-Madison, invites applications for the
position of University Archivist in the University
Archives.  The UW is seeking an archivist with a
strong vision of what a 21st-century university
archives should be, and one with a knowledge and
appreciation of history, a commitment to saving
the university's intellectual heritage in both
traditional and nontraditional formats, and a
sound understanding of the complexity of both
paper and electronic records.

This appointment will be in the Academic Archivist
Series at the III level.  Benefits include 22
vacation days, sick leave, group health and life
insurance and state retirement plan.  Minimum
full-time salary is $44,588 (annual pay basis).

QUALIFICATIONS - Degree and Area of Specialization

REQUIRED:  Bachelor's degree; minimum 7 years of
increasingly responsible experience as an
archivist; management and supervisor experience;
understanding of accepted protocols for
arrangement, description, cataloging, and
preservation of archival materials; understanding
of archival management of electronic records;
understanding of records management principles and
current trends; strong written, verbal and
interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED:  ALA-accredited MLS, or graduate degree
in archival studies, or master's degree in history
or other relevant subject; formal coursework or
training in archival management and theory, or
equivalent; experience cataloging archival
collections using standard formats; experience
providing reference service in a research or
academic library; experience with institutional
records especially university or college records;
experience working with archival collections in
non-textual formats and digital formats; formal
course work and/or training in history, including
experience in historical research; member of the
Academy of Certified Archivists, or equivalent.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The University Archivist is
responsible for overall administration of the
University Archives collections and overall
supervision of the UW-Madison Records Management
Program and Oral History Program. Areas of
responsibility include reference and public
service, collection development and management,
personnel, and general administration for the
University Archives.

The University Archives is part of the General
Library System, and the University Archivist
reports to the Curator of Special Collections and
Archives. The Archives is the official repository
not only for the UW-Madison, but also for the
UW-System Administration, Extension, and the UW
Colleges. The University Archives collections
consist of administrative records, publications,
photographs, audio- and video recordings,
architectural records, artifacts, and other
materials in diverse formats documenting the
history and life of the UW-Madison campus, UW
System Administration, UW Extension, and the UW
Colleges. The unit also includes the UW-Madison
Records Management Service and the UW-Madison Oral
History Program.

Engages in active collection development to
acquire materials of permanent historical value
for documenting the history and functions of
UW-Madison, UW System Administration, Extension,
and the UW Colleges. Takes the lead in developing
collaborative partnerships and innovative
strategies for the acquisition, archival
appraisal, and preservation of University
historical resources.

Supervises and performs collection management
activities, including accessioning, processing,
preservation, preparation of finding aids,
encoding finding aids using Encoded Archival
Description, preparing USMARC catalog records for
archival collections, and delivering information
about University Archives collections in digital
form.

Develops and implements strategies for identifying
and preserving electronic records.

Oversees University Archives reference and public
service.

Engages in active outreach; enhances the
visibility and effectiveness of University
Archives, including its Records Management and
Oral History programs; and promotes the
acquisition and use of University Archives
collections, through such means as presentations
to campus units, classes, alumni, and other
groups, exhibits, digital projects, and
instructional activities concerning University
Archives materials.

With members of the University Archives staff,
assists researchers in effective use of the
collections.

Manages Archives budgets.

Hires, trains, and supervises University Archives
staff (5 full-time staff members, two halftime
graduate assistants, part-time student employees).

Sets policies and develops procedures, in
coordination with the Department of Special
Collections.

Supervises the UW-Madison Records Management
program and the UW-Madison Oral History Program.

Manages the University Archives physical
facilities.

Serves as a member of the University of Wisconsin
System Archives Council, Campus Records Review
Group.

Cooperates with other Area Research Centers and
the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
