Re: Copier for Archives

Shelly,

We purchased a Minolta PS 3000 about two years ago. It is an overhead scanner,
so it is excellent for fragile materials. It will reproduce a page up to 11 x
17 inches, which can be scanned in one or two sections. Ours only makes black
and white reproductions. If you had a large printer, you could print off a 11 x
17 reproduction, but our printer will only take 8.5 inch wide paper. The scanner
is considerably slower than a copier. It produces up to 400 resolution, which is
very clear for text, but does not make good copies of photographs. One of the
best features is that it will produce a legible copy of the whole page,
including text from the curvature of a book. It cost about $12,000.

Pulnix (pulnix.com) in Sunnyvale, California at that time made a scanner which
made larger copies at higher resolution. Adjustments were made for lighting
with F stops. You can also check the Internet using the phrase "overhead
scanner" to find other manufacturers.

Subject: Copier for Archives

---
Good Day:

I am in the process of researching/selecting a copier for my institution's
Archives. I was wondering if there were any particular features I should be
looking for in this particular piece of office equipment when it comes to
copying fragile documents and materials. The copiers in our libraries are "book
friendly" when it comes to protecting book spines but what about fragile
materials?? Any tips, suggestions, ideas, vendor info, etc. would be helpful.

Thank you for your time in sharing your experience and information with me. If
you would like, you may e-mail me off the list at ssummers@mc.cc.md.us.
