Re: A rose by any other name? I don't think so!

Friday July 20, 2001

I've agreed with most comments about the diferences/similarities between
archivists and librarians (I'm actually both through my degrees, training and
work experience) but I would point out one glaring, obvious component to this
discussion. Many archivists are supervised by Librarians, i.e. Directors of
Libraries, Heads of Special Collections (with MLS) etc. but I can't think of
any archivist that I know that supervises librarians!

So Thelma's comment that we are not a subset but parallel to librarians
is certainly most archivists' belief ( I agree) but is not a reality in the
hierarchical workplace of information systems. A corollary--if librarians
have always had a problem with their image/status/salaries over the years (I
recently came across papers that I wrote in library school related to this
topic, circa 1979) and we're seen as a subset of librarians, then no wonder
we have similar problems with our image, etc. Just a thought, folks.
