Re: Volunteers in the archives
It all depends.... It it takes a lot of time to train and supervise a
volunteer, it may not be worth it. But a good one is invaluable.
I am so grateful to have an excellent volunteer at the moment. She is a
retired librarian and had no archival experience, but is very intelligent,
adaptable, sensible and has caught on quickly. She has lived here for a
long time and knows a great deal about local politics, history, etc. which
comes in very handy with the projects I've given her. The material she's
worked on has been disorganzied, with cryptic or no labels and with her
often terrific suggestions, we've figured out what I believe are excellent
procedures, labels, arrangements, etc. Now that I'm spoiled, I would
hesitate to accept a volunteer who didn't have some of her qualities. I
did know her and her work for years before she retired, so that helped.
