Mylar marking pens

Regarding the Light Impressions marking pen, I called the company about 7
years ago to ask if it was safe to use it on the backs of photographs, since
it smelled so strongly of chemicals. The advertising in the catalog was
vague about the pen's archival qualities, but they touted its ability to
write on everything. The response I got from the company at that time was
that it was to be used on Mylar, NEVER on collection photographs. As far as
I can tell, it is totally permanent, and thus truly not archival. Perhaps
it will not continue to spread into photographic papers over the years, but
I never use it on any collection item or even paper enclosures.

After the caution, here is an endorsement: these pens are absolutely
fantastic to use on kids clothes before a trip to camp. They never wash
out, and they write legibly on the bottoms of boots, in sleeping bags, and
on metal mess kits.
