Re: Numbering glossy prints.

I have been watching the discussion and thought of putting in a couple
of cents.

Personally, my practice is not to use marking pens at all. I am
concerned with them smearing, bleeding through and copying themselves
onto other surfaces and images. Not to mention they tend to be
permanent.

I only mark things on copy photographs which are all RC these days and
even then I use labels and, as budget permits, sleeve those. I care
about the RC prints, but not as much as my originals.

For original images where I need to make some indication of collection
etc, I will either sleeve the image then put all labeling on the sleeve
or I might use a soft lead pencil with a dull tip and am careful not to
make any impression. It depends on the collection and age of the
photographs. Mostly though, they are sleeved and labeled on the sleeve.

All of my copy prints bear the same number as the original. I have
never seen a need in my collections to indicate whether they are copy or
original. Seems kind of obvious to me when you have an RC print of a
1908 glass neg that it isn't the original print.
