Re: scanning fees

Hi Gayle and others,

A couple of comments:

1) You mention emailing images to patrons. You'll quickly discover that
email is not a viable delivery method for all but the lowest resolution
images. It is very easy for a scanned image to be at least several
megabytes in size, perhaps as much as 80 megabytes or more for certain
images at high resolution, etc. If you're looking for simplicity, this is
not it. As a policy, we decided that all patrons off campus have to wait
1-2 days while a CD-ROM with the image(s) is shipped to them. For on-campus
customers, we also offer the option of transfer via the campus LAN. We also
tried FTP, but most of the customers were not server administrators, and
could not get us permission to log in to their server for uploads. For
several years now, CD-ROM has worked quite well.

2) $15 seems like a quite reasonable fee to me. We have separate prices for
on-campus versus off-campus customers (university policy), but our prices
hover around the same general figure.

You'll soon have to make other policy decisions, such as when do you
routinely save copies of images scanned, etc. Good luck!

Sincerely,
Chuck Thomas
