DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Position plans, directs, & oversees a comprehensive preservation progrm
for the Archives and Records Section. Includes responsibilities for all
components of preservation, including but not limited to collection
assessment & storage; environmental monitoring & evaluation; collections
security; holdings maintenance; testing of supplies; disaster mitigation,
preparedness & response; development of policies & standards for storage of
paper & non-textual materials including digital image preservation;
conservation treatment; preservation reformatting; staff & public
preservation education; identification of holdings for reformatting &
digitization; grant development & management for preservation initiatives;
oversight of vendor services for conservation treatment & rebinding; &
integrated pest management. Employee also directly supervises the
Collections Management Branch, comprised of the section's conservation lab;
photo lab, & imaging unit. Oversees activities & work of section's
preservation & access taskforce & disaster response team, & provides
consultative outreach to public officials & agencies needing assistance with
disaster plans, response, & recovery.
Met ESC requirement as of 09/02/01.
KNOWLEDGE,SKILLLS AND ABILITIES
Applicant should demonstrate knowledge of current developments & best
practices in preservation & conservation of paper & non-textual media;
possess knowledge of the chemical nature of archival materials; thorough
understanding of archives & records management principles; substantial
knowledge of micrographics, digital imaging & traditional photography
including knowledge of micrographics systems, & application of digital
imaging & filming for reformatting purposes. Ability to plan, develop,
implement, monitor, & evaluate projects. Capability to hire, train, coach,
delegate to, & supervisor staff & their activities. Ability to user software
such as microsoft word, excel, & access, & database software related to
preservation. Excellent oral & written communication skills. Demonstrated
ability to work effectively with agency staff, public officials, & the
general public. Capacity to work independently & exercise sound judgment in
program management.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in
history, library science, or a related social science and four years of
progressive experience in archives and records work, preferably with one
year in an advanced, specialized or supervisory capacity; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience. Prefer additional directly-related
education and experience as specified in the knowledge, skills & abilities
and description of work sections above.
