The Princeton University Library?s general collection includes about 6
million printed volumes, as well as significant numbers of microforms,
scores and records, electronic databases and journals. Its holdings
within the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections are
especially rich. The Library employs approximately 300 professional and
support staff workers, as well as a large student and hourly workforce.

Description

The Assistant Archivist works at the Princeton University Library?s
Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, a unit of the Department of Rare
Books and Special Collections.  This library houses a major collection
of 20th-century public policy papers (current holdings of approximately
20,000 cubic feet) and the Princeton University Archives (about 15,000
cubic feet).  This person reports to the University Archivist and
Curator of Public Policy Papers, who oversees a ten-person staff.  The
primary responsibility of this person is to manage public services
operations at the Mudd Library.  On an annual basis over 2,500
researchers from around the nation and the world visit the library,
requesting over 10,000 containers and ordering over 75,000 pages of
photocopying and 600 photographs.  The Library also responds to 1,500
telephone inquiries and 2,000 mail, fax and email queries annually.  The

job requires that this person handle hundreds of reference and
permission inquiries each year, including many research-intensive
assignments. This person also edits reference responses prepared by all
other members of the staff as well as other documents produced by senior

library staff.  This position hires and supervises four support staff
(3.0 FTE) as well as several students who help with reception/security,
paging and photocopying.  Schedules 6-7 professional and support staff
involved in public services operations (open 43 hours per week);
oversees databases relating to registration, circulation, mail, and
photoduplication; participates in processing projects, exhibitions and
outreach; works one evening per week on a frequent basis.  In
cooperation with the other assistant archivist who manages processing
operations, will assign reference tasks/priorities for technical
services staff as time permits and supervise the processing tasks
assigned to public services employees.  Helps establish operations,
policies and procedures for the building and staff and participates in
system-wide library activities.


Qualifications:

Required: MLS with significant historical coursework in American history

or graduate degree, preferably in 20th century American history.  A
minimum of two years in an active public services environment must be
demonstrated.  Familiarity with library automation (especially
microcomputer and web applications).  A public service orientation
(courtesy, flexibility, patience, dependability, sound judgment,
discretion), excellent communications skills (both oral and written),
and strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
expected. Ability to lift 40 pounds. Preferred: Formal archival training

at the graduate level; supervisory experience.
