ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN, VATICAN FILM LIBRARY
SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit Institution dedicated to
education, research and healthcare, invites applications for the
position of Assistant Librarian, Vatican Film Library.

Environment:
The Vatican Film Library, established in 1953 as a microfilm repository
for manuscripts of the Vatican Library in Rome and as a research center
for medieval and Renaissance manuscript studies, is a special
collections unit of Pius XII Memorial Library at Saint Louis
University.  It holds  on microfilm approximately three-quarters of the
Latin, Greek, and Western European vernacular manuscripts belonging to
the Vatican Library, a slide collection of illuminated manuscripts
numbering over 52,000 units, and a substantial number of early printed
books in microform.  The library's extensive reference collection
contains all the published catalogues and microfilm copies of all the
handwritten inventories and indices for Vatican Library manuscripts, in
addition to catalogues for all the major manuscript libraries in North
America and Europe and a  wide range of other monographic and periodical
literature necessary to support manuscript research.

The Vatican Film Library is also one of the largest repositories in the
United States of microfilmed Jesuit archival documents relating to the
missionary activities of the Jesuits in North and South America,
containing material from the central Jesuit archives in Rome and from
other archives in Europe and the Americas.

The Vatican Film Library publishes Manuscripta, a journal devoted to
research on medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, and hosts the annual
Saint Louis Conference on Manuscript Studies.  It supports a fellowship
program for visiting scholars to make use of its materials and is an
active partner in undergraduate and graduate education at Saint Louis
University in partnership with the university's Center for Medieval and
Renaissance Studies.

Responsibilities:
Will serve as principal manuscripts cataloguer for the Vatican Film
Library, providing original and retrospective online MARC cataloguing
for medieval and Renaissance manuscripts on microfilm from the Vatican
Library and other collections.  Will research and describe manuscripts,
determine appropriate subject and genre/form access profiles for the
collection, and establish authorized headings for manuscripts, authors,
and works.  May also provide cataloguing for early printed books in
microform.  Will provide reference and other reader services to
researchers as needed and participate in collection development.

Qualifications:
M.A. or Ph.D. in related area of medieval or Renaissance studies with
specialization in manuscript research and ALA-accredited MLS or
equivalent non-professional experience (with undertaking to obtain the
professional library degree by successful candidate).  Knowledge of
paleography, codicology, and scholarly manuscript cataloguing
procedures.  Reading knowledge of Latin and French, German, or Italian.
Experience in special collections cataloguing using AACR2R, DCRB or
APPM, LCSH, genre/form thesauri, and MARC 21 desirable.

Salary and Benefits:
Rank is at level of assistant professor/librarian, non-tenure track,
permanent, 12-month contract with minimum annual salary of $35,000.
