Re: Oral History Transcripts

The Minnesota Historical Society creates a single record encompassing all
formats of the interview, with each format having a separate statement of
extent. This offers the user all relevant information in a single place.
We do full MARC cataloging with LC subject headings, but our own local oral
history catalog numbers (part of the library pages' training includes
learning the two separate places that the media and the transcripts are
stored). If two different catalog numbers were involved, our OPAC allows us
to express that fact as separate "holding libraries."

Below, as an example, is a copy of a (partial) record from our OPAC. Note
that it also cites an additional finding aid.

You might want to, if you haven't already, obtain a copy of Marion Matters,
comp., Oral History Cataloging Manual (published by the Society of American
Archivists), which addresses various cataloging and presentation options.

        Library: MN Historical Society
Location: ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION OH 6
Author: Stassen, Harold Edward, 1907-, interviewee.
Title: Oral history interview with Harold E. Stassen, 1991 June.
Description: 9 sound cassettes (60 min. each).
        Description: Transcript : 99 p. ; 28 cm.
Time-and-Place: Interviewed by Alec Kirby on 5 occasions from 24
June-28 June 1991 at the
James J. Hill House, St. Paul, Minn.
Summary: Stassen discusses his governorship of the state of
Minnesota, the state's
relationship with the mining industry, and he refutes the
label from the 1940s that
Minnesota was an isolationist state. He details his decision
to resign as governor
of Minnesota to join the United States Navy in 1943 and
describes his service in
the Navy. He lists his accomplishments at the University of
Pennsylvania and talks
about his own personal politics and political life.
Indexing-Note: An interview description sheet is available in the
repository, filed in
the oral history notebooks as OH 6.

Subject: Oral History Transcripts

Greetings,

I am not an archivist, but a cataloger in search of some information.

Here at UCA the oral history tapes have been transcribed and
bound as paper documents. These are housed in the archives
separately from the tapes.

My question is: How do other institutions handle these paper
documents?

Does your catalog staff do full MARC cataloging in a public utility
complete with LC subject headings and classification? Or is it only
in the local catalog? Do you just have a finding aid of some sort?
Are the paper copies simply attached to the record for the
tape/primary source?

Thank you for any help you can give.
