Fall Workshop Listing From SOLINET



**************ADVANCED BOOK REPAIR FOR GENERAL COLLECTIONS
(NEW!!!)***********************

Wednesday-Thursday, December 5-6, 2001 at Emory University, Woodruff
Library, Atlanta, GA from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Building upon the skills learned in the Fundamentals of Book Repair and
Intermediate Book Repair workshops. Participants will learn more complex
repair and housing techniques designed for modern, cloth, bound publishers,
bindings that are characteristics of general collections. The focus of this
two-day session is on volumes where the text block has become detached from
its cover and on constructing enclosures for fragile materials.

This workshop is designed for library staff members with experience in book
repair and/or supervisors of book repair units. Previous attendance at
SOLINET's Fundamentals of Book Repair and Intermediate Nook Repair is
mandatory for registration.

Instructors ate Tina Mason, Preservation Field Services Officer, SOLINET and
Ann Frellsen, Conservator, Emory University Libraries.

Cost is $155 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($145 early bird,
$180 late  registration); $195 Non-SOLINET members, ($185 early bird, $220
late registration). Any
institution within Georgia qualifies for the member rate.

COLLECTIONS***

Monday, November 5, 2001 at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC from 9
am - 4 pm.

This full-day workshop discusses risk management techniques for libraries
and cultural collections. Through lecture, discussion and break-out sessions
the following topics will be highlighted:

* valuation of collections
* types of property insurance coverage
* insuring specific materials
* choosing an insurance agent
* appraisal

The instructor for this workshop is Jeanne Drewes, Assistant Director for
Access and Preservation, Michigan State University Libraries. Guest
presenters from allied fields will participate in break-out sessions.

Cost is SOLINET members, all membership categories ($85 early bird, $120
late registration); $135 Non-SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late
registration). Any institution in North Carolina qualifies for the member
rate.


********FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOK REPAIR*********

Tuesday-Wednesday, November 13-14, 2001 at the Historic New Orleans
Collection,
New Orleans, LA from 8:30 am - 5 pm.

This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who perform book
repair in libraries and those who supervise repair units. The workshop
teaches
simple, economical, and preservation quality repairs for materials in
general, circulating and reference collections. The procedures covered are
tightening hinges, endsheet replacement, spine replacement, paper mending,
tip-ins and hinge-ins.

The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of materials that
are special, rare, or archival. Instructors are Tina Mason, SOLINET
Preservation Field
Services Officer and AnnFrellsen, Conservator, Emory University Libraries.

Cost is $155 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($145 early bird,

Monday, October 29, 2001 at the Historic New Orleans Collection, New
Orleans, LA from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

The workshop will outline the manager's role in organizing and planning
preservation activities in a library or archives. It includes lecture and
discussions covering the following topics:

* The nature of library materials, elements of a preservation program,
effects of storage conditions
* Organization and planning -- staffing, workflow, needs assessment
* Selection -- determining the best options, and juggling competing needs
for traditional activities with digital projects
* Strategies for integrating preservation into library operations

The instructor is Christine Wiseman, Preservation Education Officer,
Preservation Services, SOLINET.

******************PRESERVATION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC
MATERIALS*************************

Thursday, November 8, 2001 at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Deterioration of photographic materials is a significant concern in library
and archival collections. This full-day introductory workshop discusses
means of preserving photographic materials based on real-world issues and
situations. Among the topics covered are:

* photographic materials and processes
* issues with prints, color, film, glass, albums, etc.
* environment and storage guidelines
* handling guidelines
* housing guidelines
* exhibition guidelines
* duplication/reformatting
* new technologies
* collection maintenance/preservation planning

The instructor is Andrew Robb, photograph conservator whose clients have
included the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, the National
Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of American History.

Cost is $95 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($85 early bird,
$120 late  registration); $135 Non-SOLINET members, ($125 early bird, $160
late registration). Any
institution within Virginia qualifies for the member rate.
