TITLE:  University Archivist

LOCATION: Manuscripts, Special Collections, University Archives Division

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of Washington Libraries seeks an experienced archivist to
plan and oversee a dynamic, user-oriented archives program in a large
academic research library.  Under the general direction of the Head,
Manuscripts, Special Collections, University Archives Division, the
University Archivist is responsible for overseeing intellectual access to
the UW's archives, including official records and faculty papers;
supervising implementation of electronic access and database systems;
assisting in the development of digital library projects; supervising an
Assistant Archivist and support staff; and initiating and managing
outreach activities.  The successful candidate for this position will have
the opportunity to participate in setting policy in the Manuscripts,
Special Collections University Archives Division.

The University Archives consists primarily of textual records (12,000
cubic feet of public records plus substantial faculty papers) administered
in the Libraries Special Collections, Manuscripts and University Archives
Division.  Located in the center of the Seattle campus in the nine-year
old Allen Library, University Archives is a part of a major ARL library
serving a student body of 35,000, with 3,500 teaching and research
faculty, and a staff of approximately 12,000.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:

Formulates policies and procedures for the University's archival records
in accordance with state records law, accepted archival principles,
University operating needs and the priorities and objectives of the
Division and the Libraries.

Plans and implements the collection development program of the University
Archives.  Identifies records of enduring value in all formats, negotiates
with University offices for transfers of archival records, and coordinates
the function of the archives with the University's two records management
offices.  Seeks personal papers of faculty, administrators, and other
significant UW connections, negotiating terms of use and acknowledging in
receipt according to established policies of the Libraries.

Develops records appraisal policies and procedures; performs records
appraisal.

Oversees the transfer, processing, servicing, access, and preservation of
University records.

Coordinates, as appropriate, with the Libraries Curator of Manuscripts
about acquisition and disposition of private and faculty papers; and
supervising processing staff.

Supervises the Assistant University Archivist, and processing and
accessioning staff as appropriate.

Is closely involved with creation and development of the Division's
presence on the Internet, its electronic and digital growth, and its
integration with other electronic systems in the Libraries.  Enhances and
may manage the Division's local area network.

Provides reference service and user education.

Coordinates the activities of the Archives Advisory Committee to the
University Archivist.

Publicizes the University Archives in and beyond the University through
tours, exhibits, news publications, and other forms of outreach.

Plans and executes preservation and security measures for archival
materials consistent with Division and Libraries policy and procedure.

Oversees the preparation and editing of finding aids.

Fosters communication and teamwork among all University employees whose
duties involve papers and records.  Participates in library committees and
task forces as appropriate.

Participates in Libraries-wide committees, task forces, teams and program
planning as appropriate.

Assumes other responsibilities as assigned or required.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association, or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree with archival concentration, or a graduate degree in
history/archival studies is required.

2.      Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
including proven ability to work with donors/offices and demonstrated
ability to work with staff and users.  Ability to represent the University
of Washington Libraries in various groups and forums.

3.      Archival experience-minimum four years appraising, acquiring,
arranging, describing, and preserving archival records, some in a large
research institution.  Demonstrated supervisory experience and evidence of
supervisory flexibility.  Ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing
environment.

4.      Technological expertise-encompassing an awareness of issues
involved with archiving electronic records.  Knowledge of computer
applications in archives, including word processing databases, USMARC
format, Encoded Archival Description, and knowledge of records management
systems applicable to archival collections, including Gencat.


SALARY: $ 45,000  minimum.  Starting salary to be commensurate with
qualifications and background.
