race on marriage records

This is in reply to the reference request from a patron who wanted only
"white" marriage records.
I can not speak for Northern states, but it is very common for marriage
records in the South to denote the race of both the bride and groom. Until
the 1950s is was no legal for couples from different races to marry in
certain Southern States. However, I would be surprised to find such
designations as to race in Northern records. In some Southern states there
are even separate sets of "white" and "colored" marriage records at the
courthouses. The question of race is quite common among Southern
genealogical researchers - Black and White.
