Pittsburgh gets Starzl papers

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Starzl, pioneering liver
transplant surgeon and author of ?The Puzzle People,? has agreed to
donate his papers to the Archives of the University of Pittsburgh. From
what we have seen so far, the collection documents the development of
the first successful liver transplants but also gives insight into the
professional relationships between researchers and between research
institutions. The transfer of the materials is currently underway but
the collection is not likely to be available to the public for at least
a year.

This donation has gotten quite a lot of publicity in the past few days
but unfortunately the headlines read ?Surgeon donates papers to
library?. Technically correct since the Archives are part of the
University Library System but we sure wish they were a bit more accurate
as to exactly where they will be stored (and who is doing the work).

So, Peter is to be forgiven for not zeroing in on these (unless he did
and I just missed it!). It went out on AP and made the New York Times
(11/1) and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (11/5). I understand the LA
Times, Baltimore Sun and Newsday (11/1) also ran it. If anyone knows of
another announcement, I would appreciate your letting me know via email.
