Digital audio advice

I have a friend who is an audio artist, and those guys _really_ pay
attention to the quality of their sound. Her comments are below.

Barb,

I'm an independent radio producer. I own a TASCAM DA-P1 digital
field recorder (DAT). There are 3 tiers (price-wise) of DAT's. The
SONY D6 or D7 which is like a DAT Walkman for around $600, the
TASCAM DA-P1 for around $1500 and the SONY PCM ? for
around $3000. (The HHB DAT they no longer are making.)

I've had problems with my TASCAM (and also with the one we
bought for work), so if you do get one put it through as much
recording/playback as possible while under warantee. They ended
up giving me a brand new one, which has been working great.

I don't know much about Mini Disk (MD), but in the websites below
you can find out more.

Go to the Association for Independents in Radio's (AIR)website:

http://www.AIRMEDIA.org/index.html

Click on: How To: Field recording / Gear / and Recording
For info on DAT recorders.

Go to Radio College (which is a branch of AIR):

Click on Technical Tips. This has a long list of Q & A regarding
comparing mini disk (MD) to DAT, etc.

PS I find it interesting that you will artchive to reel to reel. There's
been much controversy over the longetivity of DAT tape. People
are saying CD is a more stable format. And others are saying that
reel to reel is the best!
