Re: CALL FOR SESSION IDEAS: Midwest Archives Conference, Fall 200 2

As a native South Dakotan, I have to respond here.  I lived in the state for the first 42 years of my life, of which five years were in the northern Black Hills, 17 miles from the famous Sturgis.  The Black Hills, including Mount Rushmore, are indeed beautiful, and you will want to take some time not only to visit there, but just to drive around the area.  In the northern part of the Black Hills is Spearfish Canyon with a spectacular fall showing of leaves.  And then don't forget about Deadwood, which was the third place to allow gambling (excuse me: gaming) in the United States (after Nevada and New Jersey).  During college I worked in a gaming casino in the T-shirt shop for a summer, including during the Sturgis Rally.  It was an experience I will never forget, but would not want to do again.  The traffic was horrendous and dangerous, with so many bikes on the road.

Peter,

As the natives of South Dakota say in regard to Sturgis: you've seen one sweaty body, you've seen them all.  :-)

Next October, the Midwest Archives Conference (MAC) will hold its annual
Fall meeting in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.  As we develop
the meeting's program offerings, we would like to enlist your help in
cultivating session and workshop ideas.

The Black Hills of South Dakota are definitely a treat for your eyes. Don't forget that Mt. Rushmore is located there. BUT I am thoroughly disappointed that more care was not taken in planning when the conference would take place.

It is really hard to believe that one of the major events of South Dakota will be missed by having the conference in the Fall. What event are you talking about PA? you ask Well Chris (Keep your hand down Bill Jackson of H-D) I am talking about the one and only rally held each summer at Sturgis. Just think we all could have borrowed a hog and arrived in style will Bill and the rest of the Harley-Davidson staff leading the way.

To learn more about Sturgis click (or copy-n-paste) the following url.

Well since the conference can't be moved maybe you could prevail on Bill or someone from Harley to give a talk about their archives?
