So what if someone does "just want to hang around campus." Does that make them any less of an archivist? Some people have preferences about what kinds of enviornment they work in. Sometimes environment is as important as the amount of money one can make or helping to promote the image of the profession one is in. 

My point is that there are productive ways to approach the issue of professionalization and then there are unproductive ways to do so. Asking questions about standards of archival practice and how we can all go about making sure our own work meets those standards (i.e. either through coursework, certification etc) seems fair. But insisting that people demonstrate their commitment to the profession by (basically) putting aside all personal wants and needs in deciding where/what kind of job they'll take seems draconian at best. I mean, we're not talking about matters of national security or world peace here...we're talking about archives. Let's be realistic.
