New web exhibit

The Irving Archives in the Irving Public Library, Irving, Texas, is
pleased to announce its first on-line exhibit, entitled "Stranded: Trapped
on Greenland's Ice Cap: Lt. Harry Spencer's World War II Saga, 1942-1943."
The exhibit can be found at

        **********************
Lieutenant Harry Spencer, Jr., served in the Air Transport Command,
Ferrying Division, 2nd Ferrying Group. As a co-pilot on an ATC flight crew,
he was ferrying a B-17 bomber from the northeast coast of the United States
to Europe when his plane crash-landed on the Greenland Ice Cap. Numerous
rescue attempts involving airplanes, motorized sleds, and dogsleds failed
and resulted in the deaths of three would-be rescuers and two members of the
B-17's crew. It was 129 days before the entire crew was rescued.

Harry Spencer left the service after WWII and moved to Irving,
Texas, in 1946. He was active in civic and business affairs for many
decades. Mr. Spencer served two terms on the Irving City Council, two terms
on the Irving School Board, and two decades on the Irving Community Hospital
Board. Mr. Spencer was a director of the Rotary Club and the Irving Chamber
of Commerce. In 1960, he opened Spencer Air Conditioning. Although Mr.
Spencer is retired, the business is still in operation today.

        **********************
The Archives is grateful to Mr. Spencer for furnishing the artifacts
and documents in this exhibit and the information from which the text of the
labels was written.
