Description of work:
Vacancy exists in the Archives and Records Section, Government Records
Branch, Records Description Unit. Employee serves as arrangement and
description archivist and applies basic archival principles and techniques
in the processing of collections originating in state agencies and local
governments. Assists coworkers to provide timely and accurate reference
services on unprocessed collections. Assists with physical receipt, shelving
and relocation of archival collections. Works with section staff to
determine solutions for the receipt and preservation of public records in
all formats, including email and other electronic records. Position may at
times offer training workshops on various records and archival management
issues to various groups or public employees. Occasional Saturday work
required to serve on staff rotation in State Archives Search Room.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
General knowledge of North Carolina history, its places and people.
Experience and familiarity with archival arrangement and description
principles and techniques. Ability to write clear, concise and accurate
descriptions of archival material. Working knowledge of reference sources
for historical materials, including the world wide web. Ability to function
independently with limited supervision. Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with coworkers, members of public agencies
and the general public. Knowledge of restrictions placed on certain records
by state and federal law. Ability to lift records cartons weighing up to 50
pounds. Ability to use personal computers and allied software. Valid NC
drivers license required.

Training and experience:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in history,
library science, or a related social science and one year of experience in
archives and records work; or an equivalent combination of training and
experience. Prefer additional directly related education, training and
experience as described in description of work and knowledge, skills and
abilities sections above.
