Re: Article in Chronicle of Higher Ed



 It sounds to me like there is plenty of blame to go around in the
situation described in the article. I happen to be an archivist/faculty
member who does NOT wear a suit ( except in extreme cases where it is
unavoidable ). I encourage staff to be active in the profession if they
express an interest in it, though I must confess I hear complaints from
staff at other institutions ( some quite well known by the way ) that this
is not encouraged. I have never quite understood why.

 On the other hand, I noticed that this young woman does not seem to have
gone into the job with the idea of making it a career - she states that she
wanted to be near resources for her research. She also does not seem to have
ever made very much of an effort to tell her supervisor of her desire to
progress in the field. Communication is a two way street.
