PROJECT DATABASE MANAGER, HISTORY DEPARTMENT
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

The History Department at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
County
seeks an experienced individual to manage the implementation of a
three-year Electronic Cataloguing Initiative funded by the Getty Grant
Program.  This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits.

The Project Database manger (PDM) will report to the project supervisor,
a
curator in the History Department.  Responsibilities include hiring,
training, and supervision of at least two data entry operators, as well
as
coordinating tasks with the project team.  Working with the project
coordinators (staff Collections Managers) and the Information Technology

staff, the PDM will assist with creation and administration of the
database
system, which involves establishing and maintaining data standards such
as
controlled vocabularies, thesauri, and an internal lexicon.  The PDM and

the IT personnel will collaborate in providing training for existing
staff
and new hires for using and elaborating the Microsoft Access database.
The
PDM will work with the project coordinators in mapping EAD fields to
transfer finding aids to the Online Archive of California (OAC).  This
will
include linking pre-existing images of representative items in the
collections to their respective finding aids.

The Museum's large and diverse history collections contain records and
artifacts in U.S. History, with a specialty in materials relating to
California and the West. The History Collection is unique due to its
diversity and wide representation of American history as well as for its

regional focus areas.

QUALIFICATIONS
B.A. required in history, museum studies, library and information
science,
or other related field.  The candidate should have experience
implementing
a database system and a good working knowledge of artifact terminology
as
well as that of archives or special collections.  Must be skilled in a
team-work environment and must have strong leadership skills.  Should
have
demonstrated ability in database systems and image manipulation
software;
indexing, metadata, and encoding; Access experience preferred.

SALARY
Depending on experience, plus benefits.
