Re: Article in Chronicle of Higher Ed

I think she needs to be honest with herself about why she took this job. Did
she just take it to have a paycheck and be near resources for her own
research? Or did she take it hoping to actually "make it" in the archival
profession? If so, everybody has to pay their dues somehow. She can't expect
to make it to the top in the first month or something. And I remember
something she said about her boss's review of her performance. Had she been
performing all the tasks of her job plus doing the displays she talked
about? Or was she hoping that a few attractively arranged displays would
earn brownie points? She makes archival work sound almost like interior
decorating. It would be interesting to know if this is a result of a bad
performance review because of her poor job performance, because that would
probably explain a lot.

It sounds to me like there is plenty of blame to go around in the
situation described in the article. I happen to be an archivist/faculty
member who does NOT wear a suit ( except in extreme cases where it is
unavoidable ). I encourage staff to be active in the profession if they
express an interest in it, though I must confess I hear complaints from
staff at other institutions ( some quite well known by the way ) that this
is not encouraged. I have never quite understood why.

On the other hand, I noticed that this young woman does not seem to have
gone into the job with the idea of making it a career - she states that she
wanted to be near resources for her research. She also does not seem to have
ever made very much of an effort to tell her supervisor of her desire to
progress in the field. Communication is a two way street.
