DIGITAL MANUSCRIPTS PROGRAM, NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE

The Digital Manuscripts Program of the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland is seeking a graduate student in the field of library science, archival studies, or related subject interest to participate in the NIH Summer Internship Opportunities Program.  The position offered is a Technical Information Specialist, GS-1412-7 level, with an annual salary of $31,397. This position may be full or part time (up to 40 hours/week) and will be available between the months of May and September 2002.

The summer intern will work closely with historians and other archivists who are researching and processing the papers of Nobel Prize-winning biomedical scientists. The internship will involve multiple aspects of processing a large collection including conducting inventories of accessioned material, working with a permanent archivist to arrange and describe materials in a variety of formats, identifying basic preservation needs of the collection, re-housing poorly stored items, and assisting in the development finding aids. The intern will also learn the demands and expectations of working on a major digitization project for the National Library of Medicine.
