Re: SUBJECT: Job Posting: Entry-level Archives Career Opening Availab le, New York City

All,
Perhaps it's just me, but is it disturbing to anyone else that:

1) this announcement proposes to pay $27,000 to an archivist who will be
living (well, 'barely subsisting' might be better in this case) in New York
City;

and 2) that the position requirements, staffing an "active commercial
archives," only request (not demand) "some prior experience processing
collections"? The focus on the archives is clearly evident in the
'responsibilities' section, and absolutely de-emphasized in the
'requirements' section. I'm not saying they have to hire an MLS or a CA or
anything, although I certainly believe they'd be better off. (And as many
of us unfortunately know, getting that MLS degree doesn't raise one's
salary range much, so the company probably wouldn't even have to pay much
more for an MLS-degreed person.) But if they care about their collections
shouldn't they at the very least want someone who *definitely* has archival
experience?

It seems this is another example of a company that might not believe that
their archives need to be in the hands of a professional archivist, and
clearly doesn't believe an archivist needs to be compensated reasonably. It
reflects negatively on our attempts to market and promote the archival
profession and the qualities that we and only we can bring to an archival
collection. It makes me sort of sad.
