Payroll Title: Library Assistant III.  Full Salary Range: $2371-$2946

DESCRIPTION:  Work as Archives and Manuscripts Assistant for the Mandeville Special Collections Library.  Process manuscript, archival, photographic, and other non-print materials.  Arrange, organize, describe, and preserve non-print resources for public research use.  Perform basic preservation treatment for materials.  Coordinate photographic storage/services and carry out special projects.  Serve at the department's reference desk interperting online/manual finding aids, disseminating information about the department's holdings, responding to telephone inquiries, and monitoring reading-room use of materials to insure their security.  May be required to work with dirty/dusty materials.  May be required to work occasional Saturdays and Wednesday evenings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

*Knowledge of basic research methods of core disciplines, particularly the humanities and social sciences.
*Experience working in a research library, including an understanding of the basic organizing principles.
*Experience with customer service.
*Computer literate, including experience with word processing/database management applications.
*English language and writing skills sufficient to prepare/edit finding aids, database records, collection guides, and to proofread.
*Ability to make logical decisions and to identify hierarchical relationships among groupings of materials/organizational elements.
*Demonstrated interpersonal/communication skills, including complex writing skills in the English language.

Prefer experience arranging/describing archival and non-print materials according to accepted national standards.  Prefer knowledge of standard procedures for handling fragile archival materials and of selecting proper preservation housings/treatments.  Prefer experience using local online bibliographic utilities, such as ROGER and MELVYL.  Prefer experience using Microsoft Foxpro.  Prefer knowledge of a non-English Western European language sufficient for processing materials in that language.  Prefer knowledge of photographic processes/techniques sufficient for identification and for related preservation practices.  Prefer knowledge of contemporary American literature, history of science, or of Western Americana.  Prefer customer service experience within an academic library setting.  EEO/AAE
