Cataloging Periodicals in Archives

I was interested in how academic archives, especially those affiliated with
OCLC member libraries, handled cataloging periodicals in the archives.
Here's my situation:

At Webster University, we have cataloged a few of the institution's
periodicals in cases where copies were also available in the library's
regular periodical collection. For example, we keep copies of the student
newspaper in the Archives but we also have copies in current periodicals
for anyone to access. The catalog record, however, doesn't mention the
Archives and doesn't indicate our holdings in the Archives. The record
only lists the copies in the general periodical collection.

In addition, we have periodicals in the Archives that have never been
cataloged. For example, we have a literary magazine that stopped
publishing many years ago. This is not listed at all in our library catalog.

I am meeting with the Cataloging Dept. on April 12 and we wanted to discuss
issues related to cataloging and where we might go from here. Not having
extensive background in either cataloging or Archives, I wanted to ask for
any suggestions you might have time to offer. Right now I am thinking that
we should begin to gradually catalog periodicals in the Archives, starting
with ones that have completed their runs. We should also explore adding
information about Archival holdings to titles that are also in the general
periodical collection.

Are there implications related to these actions that I should be aware of?
Are there alternative courses that you would recommend? Am I opening up a
Pandora's box that I'll regret?

Thank you for your time and any comments you might offer.
