Sticky labels

Dear List,
I hope to draw on your expertise concerning a
preservation question. As Archives Specialist at Queens
College (Charlotte, NC), I am also responsible for the Special
Collections. Among the artifacts and mementos we have is
a Bible given the College by King Edward VI for the
inauguration of our chapel in 1950.
My colleague who was doing an inventory in Special
Collections noted to our consternation that someone had
attached a sticky label on the back of the Bible ( and
evidently on many more items). I was able to carefully
detach the label because of the "pebbly" hard surface of the
cover, but worry about cleaning off the residual adhesive.
Would a simple isopropyl alcohol solution work, or
what would you suggest? In addition, when I am unable to
pull off such a label without damaging the surface of other
items are there ways to safely detach the offending sucker?
Or should I try? Your advice will be most welcome.
        With thanks in advance,
Jean (going back into lurking) Reed
