and the Metropolitan New York Library Council
                                  Present

                            The Archival Hedge:
                     Records Management for Archivists

To paraphrase Gerald Ham's famous article, records management can be an
"archival hedge" against the destruction of records of enduring value. In
addition, implementing a records management program can increase the
archivist's value to his or her organization. This workshop will cover the
basic elements of a records management program, including: the reasons for
records management, developing retention schedules, managing inactive
records in a records system, improving active files, and implementing a
vital records program.

Gregory S. Hunter, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Palmer School of
Library and Information Science, Long Island University. He is both a
Certified Records Manager and a Certified Archivist. Dr. Hunter previously
served as Manager of Corporate Records for ITT Corporation World
Headquarters and Director of Archival Programs for the United Negro College
Fund, Inc. He is the author of over twenty-five articles and four books,
including Developing and Maintaining Practical Archives (Neal Schuman,
1996) and Preserving Digital Information (Neal Schuman, 2000).
