Sure. 246 is the variant title field, just instituted a few years ago. For rare book catalogers,
original catalogers, archives catalogers, and manuscript catalogers, it's the best thing since
sliced bread. It's basically a free text field. The first indicator codes how the notes and added
entries appear. With the second indicator, you can code for: parallel title, distinctive title,
cover title, spine title, added title page title, caption title, running title, spine title, other
title, or (my favorite) a title you just make up because you believe that's how a user might search
it. Multiple 246s are great!
So, for Tara's specific example:
100 1 Public, John Q.
245 10 Letter
246 3 Andrew Jackson letter
246 3 Jackson letter
246 3 John Q. Public's letter to Andrew Jackson
246 3 Public's letter to Jackson
246 3 Public letter to Jackson
246 3 Public's letter to Andrew Jackson
246 3 Public letter to Andrew Jackson
246 3 Public/Jackson letter
600 10 Jackson, Andrew, $d 1767-1845.
Just for the helluvit, I might throw AJ into 700 as well.
I hope this helps.
