Re: 1814 Red Leather stains

Title: RE: 1814 Red Leather stains

A follow-up to my last comments:

The original thinking behind the use of methyl-cellulose solutions on red rot was to consolidate the leather. It was shown to be effective up to a certain point in the stages of deterioration, BUT IT DIDN'T CHANGE THE NATURE OF THE LEATHER, which would only continue to deteriorate.

Any treatment that was capable of actually penetrating the leather deep enough to truly consolidate the materials would be permanent in the worst possible way.

In the hands of skilled conservators, methyl cellulose might be the best approach. In the hands of anyone else, it's sure-fire recipe for disaster.
