Job Opportunity: Project Archivist at Columbia University



PROJECT ARCHIVIST, RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY


The Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library is searching for an experienced archivist to process four or five modern collections in the fields of journalism and public affairs.  Working under the supervision of the Curator of Manuscripts and the Coordinator of Technical Services, the project archivist will be responsible for sorting, arranging, weeding, re-housing, determining preservation needs, and creating online finding aids for research use.  The collections, ranging in subject from local politics to modern economics, cover post-1940 records relating to newspaper journalism, television, finance, political history and related topics.  The position will last two years, with a possible extension to three years.

Requirements are: ALA accredited MLS, with emphasis on archival management, or an MA in archival management and at least one year of experience in the field of archival management; knowledge of and competence in manuscript and archival management and processing techniques; experience with computers, networks, electronic access techniques (including HTML, SGML, and EAD), and website design; knowledge of PC-based word processing programs; ability to work efficiently and meet project goals and deadlines; excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Preferred qualifications include knowledge of late 20
th-century politics and history.

Salary ranges for this PC I position are: Librarian I: $40,600 - $50,750; Librarian II: $42,600 - $57,510; Librarian III: $45,600 - $68,400; Librarian IV: $50,600 - $73,370. We offer excellent benefits including tuition exemption for self and family and assistance with University housing.
