Re: red rot

This is a very widespread problem in most collections.

Use the Cellugel. It is made with Kucel G (an hydroxypropylcellulose) in
either isopropynol or ethanol. What it does is penetrate into what's left of
the leather and bond it together, also coating it. It'll help keep your hands
and adjacent items cleaner, mostly. Beyond that, it's not going to preserve
the leather. That is generally pretty far gone. DO NOT use a leather dressing
or anything water based. Won't do anything except make a big mess and create
further problems. If you have further questions, feel free to cotnact me
off-list.

Subject: red rot

Does anyone out there in Archives land have an idea about the products
available for red rot? I have quite a few leather books that are quite old
and have red rot big time. Metal Edge does have two products, one called
Cellugel and the other Fredelka Formula. Does anyone have an opinion on
which one of these (or any other product) actually works without damaging
either the paper or leather?
