SC Archival Association Upcoming Activities and Events
The South Carolina Archival Association has several upcoming events and
activities to announce:
SUMMER EVENT SET FOR MEPKIN ABBEY, SEPTEMBER 7
Historic Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner will host SCAA?s second annual summer
event on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002. This special event is open to all SCAA
members, families, and friends. Pre-registration by August 15 is required.
Special guided tours start at 11:00 a.m.
Originally a Native American hunting ground, Mepkin was acquired by American
patriot Henry Laurens in 1762. Laurens, first president of the Continental
Congress, was captured by the British in the American Revolution and
exchanged for General Cornwallis. In 1936 Mepkin was acquired by publisher
and philanthropist Henry Luck, whose wife Clare Boothe Luce commissioned
noted landscape architect Loutrell Briggs to restore the grounds. In 1949
the Luces arranged for the Trappist monks of the Worldwide Order of
Cistercians of the Strict Observance to establish a monastery on the
grounds.
The SCAA group will also tour the new Clare Boothe Luce Library. Box
lunches are included. The cost is $20 for adults, $15 for children. SCAA
sponsors the Summer Event to exchange knowledge of cultural institutions in
the state and serve as a fundraiser for its scholarship program. Please
register by August 15 by contacting Jeanette Bergeron at 803-461-3234 or
emailing archives@ltss.edu.
