Re: remotely archival: historic textile/clothing question

There are reproduction Sears catalogs from earlier days...when sketches of
goods in lieu of photographs portrayed goods for sale. I am positive you can
identify this item, or a similar dress form, in one of these reproduction
catalogs, which really were books published in the last decade or so. Larger
public libraries and perhaps academic libraries would have them. They are
very interesting to look through....this prices and claims of the products
make fascinating reading.

Subject: remotely archival: historic textile/clothing question

All,

I think this is only remotely archival, if even that, however, I need some
assistance and feel confident someone on the list can help me! In my
spare time I'm a member of a historic house textile/custom committee. The
group would like to display an old dress form with the date 1909 stamped on
the top. At least I think it's called a dress form. I'd like to research
the thing to do the exhibit label but I'm having very little luck finding
anything about the item. It's a metal form that's adjustable and I did
find a definition in "The Dictionary of Costume." However, I can't seem to
find much else either on the internet, in books, or through a couple of
local textile exhibits. What I want is a book or something that gives me
some info on how these things were used, who used them, time frame, etc. I
know they were used to fit or make dresses but I'd like more concrete
information. Please reply off list unless this is of burning interest to
others!

Many, many thanks,
