Re: Disposing of Rare Books

Having worked in a 'Library and Archives', I've seen librarians sell rare
used books, that were clearly outside the institution's scope, to dealers
who specialize in... well, rare used books (sorry, it's been a long week).
Any income was then redirected to purchasing more appropriate titles, etc.

An online alternative to E-bay might be something like Ebsco
(www.ebsco.com), which I believe offers a subscription based service
catering to academic libraries, institutions, and such. Basically, they
handle a lot of the administrative, advertising, and shipping costs for a
fee on each book sold. (I've always been on the "archival side of the
library" so I don't know if they charge a registration fee, or any of the
details.)

Of course, institutions also donate materials to other historical societies
or repositories if the items fall under one of the latters' collecting
scope. Maybe the Library and Librarians' listserv would have some
suggestions?

Subject: Disposing of rare books

We regularly offer materials to each other on this list, but once in a
while something turns up that I'm not quite ready to pass along gratis,
such as a 1851 imprint of _Uncle Tom's Cabin_ or Wilhelm von Humboldt's
_Ideen zu einem Versuch, die Graenzen der Wirksamkeit des Staats zu
bestimmen_ (Breslau, 1851). The latter item appears in online
booksellers lists priced at $600 and $1450.

These items are outside the scope of our collection. How do others deal
with the disposal of such items?

I'm sure this will be of general interest for the list (or maybe it's
been covered before).
