Re: Professional archivists

I was going to hold my tongue, but since others have replied I will chime in
as well. First off, I started the thread, so I apologize if anyone was
greatly offended. I also don't mean to take anyone specific to task for
their frustration with the current discussions on the list.

Despite that, I don't really think this is such a big deal. As Elaine
pointed out, many of us work alone, or largely so. We have few
opportunities to socialize with other (especially if we don't make SAA) and
the list sometimes becomes the equivalent of a cocktail party or a
conversation in the hall at the conferene.

I admit the off-topic conversation is not purely apropos of the list, but
frankly, that's OK. You can dump the responses in the trash without a
second thought. And as I've said before, if the conversation on the list
isn't archival, members are free to bring up new subjects. I'll remind
everyone that the food thread started with a legitimate archival topic - my
posting on photo organization.

If anyone's drastically upset, one could always start one's own list and
insist the conversations are purely archival. I for one think that kind of
list would be useful but uninteresting and cut down on the camaraderie of
this list, which can get too much after a while but makes life more fun.

Anyway, I could use a Corned Beef on rye with a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda
