Timeline

Since 1998, EcoAccess has grown from an idea in one person's head to an organization that reaches people around the world. Our current focus is to serve residents of the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill Triangle area of North Carolina, but our ambition is to serve a global audience.

1998

  • EcoAccess incorporated as a North Carolina non-profit membership organization.

  • Andy Schwab, Frank Taylor, Hadley Wilson Horch, and Scott Madry join Fred Wilson Horch on the founding Board.

  • Fred Burke donates four server machines to EcoAccess.

  • Interpath Communications donates rack space and Internet connectivity.

  • An international team of volunteers begins designing the EcoAccess web site.

  • Walter Kesting and Charles Holton come up with the "winning" design for the EcoAccess "e key" logo.

  • Richard Stallman and other leaders in the "free software" and "open source" community contribute ideas toward building an environmental web site using the model pioneered by the GNU and Linux software projects.

  • Version 1.0 of the web site published.

1999

  • Ray Wilson of Indianapolis serves as Chair of the first Council of Advisors.

  • Fred develops a prototype of the software architecture for EcoAccess, presenting the details at the 1999 Linux Expo in Raleigh, NC.

  • Version 2.0 of the web site published.

  • EcoAccess receives 501(c)(3) status, becoming eligible to receive tax-deductible gifts.

2000

  • Charles Holton designs Version 3.0 of the web site.

  • Version 3.0 of the web site published, using a new software platform called Zope.

  • EcoAccess participates in the 2000 Durham Earth Day Festival.

  • Student interns from Duke University, NCCU, NCSU and UNC develop content for the web site.

  • Ben Herrick, Nick Lutz, and other student interns produce several in-depth articles for the web site. Several local experts kindly review these articles for factual accuracy.

  • John Ganzi joins the EcoAccess Board.

  • Board makes strategic decision to focus on Triangle instead of global environmental issues.

2001

  • EcoAccess hires Ben Herrick as our Assistant Director

  • Tom Bryan, Eric Walstad, and a half-dozen more volunteers from around the world join the Technology team.

  • EcoAccess rents office space in Durham.

  • EcoAccess conducts a design workshop, including Dean Naujoks and a dozen other volunteers from the community.

  • Joe Komenda and Hilarie Nickerson design Version 4.0 of the web site.

  • EcoAccess participates in the 2001 Durham Earth Day Festival.

  • Anne Taylor et al named to new Advisory Council. Dissolve old Board of Advisors.

  • Shodor Foundation donates office space and Internet connectivity.

  • Ben leaves North Carolina to live in Central America before applying for medical school.

  • EcoAccess hires Amy Overfield as our Assistant Director for the summer.

  • EcoAccess participates in the Festival for the Eno.

  • EcoAccess agrees to be the fiscal sponsor for the 2002 Durham Earth Day Festival.

  • EcoAccess hires Teresa Mitchell as our Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Dean Naujoks joins EcoAccess Board, becomes President of EcoAccess.

  • EcoAccess hires Jena Matzen as our Associate Director; she resigns.

  • Kathy Naujoks joins EcoAccess Board, becomes Treasurer of EcoAccess.

  • Henri Meli joins the EcoAccess Board.

  • David Bynum joins the EcoAccess Board, becomes Vice President of EcoAccess.

  • Scott Madry resigns from the EcoAccess Board.

2002

  • EcoAccess moves its physical office to Shodor.

  • Alan Barnhardt, Christian Stalberg and Janine Mealey join the EcoAccess Board.

  • EcoAccess participates in the 2002 Durham Earth Day Festival.

  • EcoAccess receives funding for and publishes the online Water Quality Handbook for Triangle residents.

  • Mark Connolly joins the Technology Team.
