Nehemiah-I think it was TomJ posted some equations a while back to
show the chemistry.

Aquarium/pond dechlorinator: Na2S2O3 + Cl2 + H2O = Na2So4 + S + 2HCl
(Theoretical use ratio 2.225 _at_ pH 6.5)

Also: H2O2 + Cl2 = 2HCl + O2 (Theoretical use ratio 0.488)

And I'm quite sure it was Elaine that mentioned to add a generous
amount of humic acid after the thiosulphate has done reacting, to
combine with and render harmless the resulting salts. The sulphur is
not good for the fungi, obviously, but apparently the humic will
reduce it's nastiness in the water.

I'm wondering if that humic could help with the Cl- left over after
using the peroxide for dechlorinating. A bit of humic doesn't
usually
hurt in starting out a brew anyway...it's the organic matter in our
water systems that takes out a lot of the added chlorine as well.

This is one reason they like to add chloramine, which is far more
stable (good for a water utility, bad for us drinking and watering
with it other than it's freedom from pathogens). With my low
chlorine
levels here, I imagine a shot of humic would actually combine with
the
Cl2 in the municipal water and be all that's needed. Using H202 to
be
sure.

Again, with chloramine, I don't know that any chemical approach has
been postulated. Thankfully the greater Vancouver area withdrew it
after trialing the stuff for about a year...sure wish they'd go with
the ozonation system they've been talking and talking about!
