RE: [compost_tea] Sodium Hypochlorite

I know that chlorine must be removed for AACT. Our water tests very low
for chlorine (with a pool test strip).

I did a Web search and was not satisfied with what I found regarding how
sodium hypochlorite reacts in water. I did not get the full picture of the
reaction.

In general, it looks like NaOCl produces HOCl + OCl. Then the HOCl turns
into Cl gas + H (hydrogen ions) + ?. Also, you must get NaCl out of the
deal, but I'm not sure where/how.

However, water pH has an effect on the breakdown. In alkaline conditions
you get Cl ions and H ions, but in acidic conditions you get Cl gas and O2.
I'd like to see the chemical equasion for this but have not found it on
the Web.

Also, hypochlorites (HOCl) are very reactive to organic matter at pH 6-7.5.
So, if you have sodium hypochlorite in the water and you put it on highly
organic soil, what happens? What is the chemical reaction?

I'm thinking there might be unreacted sodium hypochlorite left in my water
at the tap that is reacting with my soil when I water. I'm trying to
determine the effect of this. I don't think unreacted sodium hypochlorite
would show up as chlorine on a test strip.

I'm no chemist but a web search explained it this way,

Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOcCl) is a pale greenish liquid also known as soda
bleach or liquid bleach. It is prepared by reacting dilute caustic soda
solution with liquid or gaseous chlorine accompanied by cooling.

BLEACH
Bleach is produced by reacting chlorine
<http://www.eurochlor.org/tools/glossary/#cl> into a dilute sodium
hydroxide solution. This solution is also known as "Eau de Labarraque", and
"Eau de Javel".

We test for total AND active chlorine.

Chlorine compounds MUST be removed for quality AACT.

A good pool test kit will test for chlorine.

Hi all. I need help with chemistry again.

60 percent of our water is treated with 12 percent sodium hypochlorite
solution
40 percent of our water is treated with chlorine
Our water tends to be a bit alkaline

1) What happens to the sodium hypochlorite when it's added to water? I'm
interested in the chemical equasion -- the byproducts of the breakdown of
NaOCl.

1b) Can there be unreacted sodium hypochlorite in the water that comes out
of my tap?

2) What is the effect of our water (with the above amounts of sodium
hypochlorite) on soil and soil biology?

3) What is the effect of our water on AACT production?

4) What test can I do to check for unreacted sodium hypochlorite and NaOCl
derivatives?

Many thanks in advance for your help!
Paulette
