CUSO is a non profit organization that works for social justice around the
world.  We offer 2-year contracts to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants
with at least 2 years relevant work experience.   Salaries are sufficient to
cover modest expenses, and airfare, orientation, language training, infield
support and benefits are provided by CUSO, plus $9200 in cash paid in Canada
over 2 years.  Opportunities for families with children are limited.

POSITION SUMMARIES
COMMUNITY SHARED AGRICULTURE ADVISORS - THAILAND and INDONESIA (to be confirmed)
Summary: To provide farmers, farmers' organizations, agriculture and
consumer groups with an understanding of the concepts and practices of
community shared agriculture (CSA), with a view to implementation, including
workshops and follow-up.  CSA is a marketing system that encourages
environmentally safe and socially equitable agriculture under the control of
small farmers and consumers.

Qualifications: Experience in CSA, preferably as a producer.  Experience in
workshop organization, training, etc.

PLANT PROTECTION OFFICER - PRACHINBURI, THAILAND
Summary: Work with the plant protection section of the Department of
Agricultural Extension in researching, testing and extending alternative
pest control methods that are safe for the environment, the producer and the
consumer, that are economically feasible, and that are as far as possible
under the farmers' control.  This work focuses mostly on fruit (durian,
mango, sandorica, jackfruit, etc.) and rice, though there is also
opportunity for work in vegetables.

Qualifications:B.Sc. in Entomology or Plant Pathology or related field. 2
years work experience in agriculture, including plant protection. 

AGRICULTURALIST/PEST MANAGEMENT OFFICER - CHANTHABURI, THAILAND
Summary: Assist in identifying pest problems (including insects and
disease), in conducting research on these problems, especially on
alternatives to the use of synthetic pesticides, in advising farmers on
these alternatives and in training extension agents.  This shall include
visits to farmers' orchards and fields and laboratory work.

Qualifications: M.Sc or B.Sc in Agriculture, specializing in pest
management, including some diagnosis and laboratory experience.  At least 2
years experience, preferably with tropical agriculture.

IRRIGATION/RURAL DEVELOPMENT ADVISOR - VIENTIANE, LAO PDR
Summary: To incorporate rural development into the bachelor level curriculum
for the Department of Irrigation and Engineering within the Lao PDR National
University, to strengthen the capacity of college staff in teaching and
training, as well as coordination and cooperation with outside development
agencies and nongovernmental organizations. 

Qualifications: 2 years experience in irrigation or a related field.
Candidates with a strong background in rural development will also be
considered.  Teaching or training experience beneficial, as well as
experience working and living overseas.

AGRONOMIST - SAVANNAKHET, LAO PDR
Summary: To promote techniques of sustainable agriculture and develop the
institutional strength of the newly formed Sustainable Agriculture and Rural
Development Training Centre, including research, training and collecting
field data.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree and at least 3 years experience in
agriculture or a related field.  Teaching or training experience and
experience working and living overseas desirable.

Can't go overseas?  Get involved with our volunteer and education activities
in Canada.
