Golden Eagle, Alleghany County

Dear Carolinabirders, Blue Ridge Birders, and Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust:

Somewhat to my surprize, the Golden Eagle did return briefly today, Friday,
to the dead deer. It fed from about 12:30 to 1:30 PM. On Wednesday
afternoon very late I placed about 100 yards from the deer the carcase of
one of my ewes that had died the previous week. The eagle did not go to the
sheep, apparently preferring venison, though several ravens have been
working on poor old Twinky.

I have no way of predicting the likelihood of this eagle returning Saturday
or Sunday, nor time. It has appeared from as early 10 AM until as late as
2:30 PM in the past week, and did not show Thursday.

If any are interested, I intend to be here most of the weekend anyway. The
farm is about 100 miles north of Charlotte and 90 miles NW of
Winston-Salem, in Piney Creek, Alleghany County. From W-S, go west on US
421 to I-77, then North. From Charlotte, go North on I-77. About 1 mile
north of the I-77/Jonesville intersection, exit LEFT on the US 21/Sparta
exit. Go to Sparta, then continue north on US 21 about 4 miles to the US
21/US 221 intersection. Continue straight on US 221 South about 1 mile to
NC 93. Turn Right on NC 93 to Piney Creek and Mouth of Wilson. Go about 8
miles to Pugh's Store on left (downtown Piney Creek, folks!) then continue
straight on NC 93 1.3 miles to my lane on right. Sign "Stoney Knob Farm"
and red mailbox with "9124" in yellow paint. Drive up long, bumpy lane to
barn and equipment shed. If the eagle is present, it will probably be near
the deer carcase which is 350-400 meters away on the open pasture directly
ahead, beyond the equipment shed and old chicken house, near Stoney Knob.

Better call ahead, PLEASE before 9:00 PM. Telephone 336-359-2909.
