Last Saturday, the Moore County Bird Club tallied 56 species on a field
trip to Lake Paul Wallace, Bennettsville, SC. Highlights were an adult
Bald Eagle, perched and in the air, a pair of Ospreys displaying near
their nest site, a rather secretive Common Snipe and a surprising number
of waterfowl still on the lake. Ruddy Ducks, with males in breeding
plumage, were most numerous, but there were also Ring-necked Ducks,
Lesser Scaup and Buffleheads along with the resident Mallards and Wood
Ducks. The nature walk along the lake was alive with birds, most of
which were Yellow-rumped Warblers, with a few resident Pine Warblers.
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher and Yellow-throated Warbler were on territory at
nearby Burnt Factory Pond.
Field trips to Lake Wallace are planned for the Carolina Bird Club
meeting in Southern Pines, May 3 through May 6.
