Hi Carolinabirders!
Lake Pinehurst has been pretty quiet this year, but it was interesting
this morning. I was greeted by a breeding plumage Common Loon. Also
present were about 30 Ruddy ducks, 22 American Wigeons, 5 Buffleheads, 4
Double-crested Cormorants, 4 Green-winged Teal, 1 Blue-winged Teal, 1
Northern Shoveler and the usual 4 or 5 Pied-billed Grebes. Three
Ring-necked Ducks were still present on the small nearby pond at Queens
Court. There were many Tee Swallows over the lake along with several
Rough-winged Swallows and a similar number of Purple Martins. There was
also a single Chimney Swift higher over the lake. Has anyone else been
impressed by the number of American Kestrels moving through? I had 5 on
utility wires in less than 1/2 mile along Linden Road this morning. 4
males and 1 female.
