I went to Raven Rock State Park this morning to look for warblers.
Since the park opens at 8 a.m. and I was able to leave Fayetteville
before 6:30, I stopped at the US 401 bridge over Upper Little River
(between Bunnlevel and Lillington) to look for birds. There were
plenty of prothonotary warblers and a nesting pair of phoebes. Last
weekend I had heard an indigo bunting. Today I both heard and saw
it. The best bird at Upper Little River was a yellow-billed cuckoo.
The funniest was either a single barred owl upset with the world or
possibly two barred owls having a family discussion.
At Raven Rock I took the Little Creek trail. My target species were
hooded warbler and Louisiana waterthrush. I heard a number of
hoodeds and saw one male, a life bird for me. I didn't see any
waterthrushes. There were plenty of Acadian flycatchers in the
woods. I heard many and saw one clearly. I also heard one or two
wood thrushes singing.
A very good morning.
Bob
