This morning (5:30-7:30) I did route 10 (New Hope Church Road) of the
Orange Co. Mini Breeding Bird Survey (http://www.unc.edu/~rhwiley/mbbs/).
It wasn't as birdy as yesterday, but I observed 400 birds in 50 species.
The highlight was Cedar Waxings at two stops, a flock of 5 and a single.
I didn't see any in juvenile plumage, but they could breeding around here.
Summer Cedar Waxwings are very rare -- the only Orange Co. report I know
of was 1 on 6/5/97. Evidence of nesting has been found once near Jordan
Lake (6/21/98) and once near Falls Lake (7/18/88).
Most common bird again was Canada Goose (64) and the most frequent was
Northern Cardinal (seen in 16 of 20 stops).
