MISSISSIPPI KITE - GREENVILLE, NC

Today while enjoying the cooler weather, and working in our yard, I caught a
glimpse out of the corner of my eye of some large birds low overhead. I
looked up and saw two low flying Turkey Vultures. Not a rare sight for me
in Greenville, but I don't usually see them so low and directly over my
yard. What really caught my eye was a third raptor soaring with them. It
was a first year MISSISSIPPI KITE over my house! I ran inside to get my
wife Pat and a pair of binoculars. She was able to get on the bird quickly.
I immediately went back inside to get my scope too. No sooner had I set
it up, and found the kite, when it broke away from the Turkey Vultures, and
made a fast departure to the North.

I have seen adult Mississippi Kites near the Tar River in Greenville a
couple of times in previous years in the Spring. I have never seen them
anywhere near my house, nor have I seen any of these dispersing first year
birds anywhere in NC. It was one of my better yard birds!
