HBSP on July 19

Hi Carolinabirders,
Today, I went to the jetty, jetty pond, Kerrigan Trail, and most of the
carriage path. I was, of course at Huntington Beach S.P., Murrells Inlet,
Georgetown County, SC. Before I do the list I want to explain that after I
arrived and counted the shorebirds in the jetty pond area I observed two
individuals walk into the area casting nets for bait fish. They were
joined later by three people shelling. Needless to say the almost 300
birds-terns and shorebirds mostly migrant dowitcher were forced out of the
area.
I would hope that SCPRT would somehow be able to designate and put up the
storm proof signage that would make the sandflat in front of the jetty pond
a "KEEP OUT ZONE". This level of protection is needed because this area is
the last known ground nesting area for Least Tern in the state (summer 97)
and a nesting habitat for Wilson's Plover, SC endangered, is nearby. In
addition substantial numbers and variety of shorebirds and terns use this
area for a feeding and resting area in migration and winter. "Is anyone
listening, does anyone care" letter of Geo. Washington to the Second
Continental Congress from his winter camp at Morristown, N.J. There are
other areas of the park more appropriate for casting nets for bait fish and
for shelling than the jetty pond sandflat.
I am sure the Waccamaw Audubon Society, Winyah Group of the Sierra Club
and the Carolina Bird Club would be willing to support such a campaign to
get that designation for the area.
