The Common Loon reported as having a transmitter on its
back at Atlantic Beach, NC this weekend really did have
a transmitter on its back.
It's a satellite transmitter. The bird was captured and
fitted with the transmitter in Wisconsin last summer.
It stayed there until early November. It had a brief
stay on Lake Michigan and then spent some time
(I don't know how much) off the coast of Georgia
(up to 140 miles offshore). And now it's feeding
in a canal at Atlantic Beach. The bird is a first-winter
bird.
The information above is second-hand.
